Shipping Information

Prepregs are not classified as 'dangerous goods' for transport purposes but they do need to be kept frozen when not in use for more than a few days. Because of their perishable nature, prepregs are generally shipped internationally on priority services.

International Shipping

Because we send the majority of 'dangerous goods' by road, it is sometimes not possible to combine prepreg and dangerous goods on the same order for delivery to some countries. If you want to order dangerous goods items (such as resins) and prepregs then the shipping calculator may notify you that you need to place two separate orders.

Customs Clearance of Prepregs

We remind export customers that it is their responsibility clear goods through their local customs. Any delay caused during customs clearance is outside of our control and as such, Easy Composites Ltd cannot refund or replace materials which are found to be damaged or unusable on arrival as a result of delays during customs clearance.

Whilst such delays are very rare, we strongly advise all customers intending to import prepreg materials to contact their local customs agency to seek full clarification of the import procedure and whether delays are likely before placing an order. By placing an order for prepreg materials, you accept these conditions of sale.

XC110 210g 2x2 Twill 3k Prepreg Carbon Fibre (1250mm)

The surface ply for our XPREG® XC110 out-of-autoclave prepreg carbon fibre system. This is an uncured prepreg material and requires an oven or autoclave to cure it.

This 210gsm 3k prepreg uses a 2x2 twill weave for the classic carbon fibre appearance and excellent drape characteristics. It can be used on its own, in one or more plies, or together with a heavier backing ply for thicker laminates.

This prepreg reinforcement is 1.25m (1250mm) wide and sold in a choice of prepacked roll lengths.

XPREG® XC110 is an advanced out of autoclave prepreg carbon fibre surface system designed specifically for out-of-autoclave (vacuum bag, oven cure) processing. After several years in development, XC110 is a class-leading prepreg system capable of producing carbon fibre components with a 'class A' surface finish and minimal void content when oven-cured under vacuum pressure only.

Components made using the XC110 resin system offer mechanical properties comparable to autoclave-cure systems (such as XPREG® XC130) without the need for expensive autoclave plant or the associated cycle costs. The system is also ideally suited for large components which exceed the capacity of typical autoclaves, such as boat hulls and turbine blades.

XC110 prepregs can be backed-up with (and co-cured alongside) unidirectional reinforcement (from the XC130 range) and are fully compatible with our XA120 adhesive film meaning that even the most complex composite structures - including honeycomb cores - can be achieved out-of-autoclave.

The OOA prepreg carbon fibre 3k 210g material listed on this page is recommended for use as a surface ply, typically backed-up with one or more layers of XC110 416g 12k Backing Ply.

How to Buy

All XPREG® prepregs are stored on site in our freezers. To reduce handling time and allow same-day dispatch, prepregs are available in pre-cut roll lengths. Choose the roll length you require from the drop-down list at the top of the page. When ordering a full roll of fabric the drop-down list shows the typical roll length but please allow for length variance of plus or minus 1m which has already been factored into the low unit price of our full length rolls.

Your XPREG® prepreg is sealed in air-tight packaging and will ship from us still frozen. Please see the transport tab for further details and important information about delivery.

Further Information

Curing

XPREG® XC110 is designed to be oven cured in a vacuum bag at full vacuum pressure however it can also be cured in an autoclave or hot-press. Minimum vacuum pressure is 10mbar.

For best results, an accurately controlled multi-stage temperature cycle with final cure temperature of 120°C should be followed. See technical datasheet or XC110 Processing Guide for details, including a range of alternative cure cycles from 85°C.

Suitable Moulds/Tooling

Moulds/tools should be epoxy-based composite moulds, epoxy tooling board or metal. In all cases, moulds must be temperature stable to a minimum of 85°C but ideally to 120°C.

Fully Compatible:

  • High temp epoxy hand-layup moulds (e.g. EG160 / EMP160)
  • Carbon or glass fibre prepreg moulds (e.g. XPREG® XT135)
  • Epoxy tooling board (e.g. EB700 Epoxy Tooling Board with S120 Board Sealer)
  • Aluminium / stainless steel moulds
  • Toughened glass (for flat sheet/panels)

Although it is possible to use vinylester tools (such as Uni-Mould™) they are not recommended due to the increased possibility of surface imperfections (pin holes) which can occur when XPREG® XC110 is cured in the presence of vinylester.

Storage and Handling

When not in use, XPREG® prepregs should be kept frozen at -18°C (0°F) in sealed plastic packaging. When ready to use, the material should be removed from the freezer and allowed to thaw fully to room temperature before being removed from the packaging.

Remaining material should be re-sealed before returning to the freezer to avoid the risk of moisture uptake.

Unfortunately we do not stock any pre-pregs with a flexible resin. The only flexible resin we supply is our EF80 Flexible Epoxy Resin which is suitable for wet lay and vacuum bagged processes.

From a Structural perspective, both sides of the XC110 are identical and will perform the same. In cosmetic terms, the side against the backing paper, fractionally has more resin on it and is slightly more tacky. This means applying that side to the mould may help to slightly improve the cosmetic finish of the part.

To improve adhesion of the pre-preg material, very gently waft a heat gun over it for a few seconds, or hold it in between two gloved hands. The slight warmth will help improve the tackiness of the material and help it stay in place on the mould.

XPREG has a god level of tack so will stick to a polished mould surface. There is no need to have the surface dull - in fact this is undesirable as the finished part will be dull in finish too. In cooler environments, you can increase the tack of the pre-preg by warming it slightly with a heat gun.

Although we have not specifically tested for it, we would not expect any problems to be caused by storing XC110 prepreg at -70°C. You will however appreciate that this is an unusual condition and that without actual test data or experience we are to some extent making an assumption.

The standard cure cycle indicated on the technical datasheet (which finishes at 120°C) will fully cure the XC110 prepreg and achieve its maximum Tg of 115°C and no further cure or post cure is required.



If you choose to use one of the lower temperature cure cycles (included in the processing guide document) which finish on a lower maximum temperature then although the prepreg will be properly cured and usable you would need to post-cure it at the full 120°C if you wanted to achieve the maximum Tg (i.e. maximum service temperature) of 115°C. When post-curing a component off the mould you should use a very slow ramp rate from ambient up to 120°C (maximum 0.5°C per minute) to minimise the risk of distortion.

The weight referred to is the weight of the raw carbon cloth used in the Pre-preg manufacture, which in this case is 210gsm. During the toll-pregnation process, 42% resin is added to give an overall weight of 362gsm.

This fabric is approximately 0.25mm thick after processing. This will vary slightly depending on laminate consolidation.

You should not need to change the cure cycle for a typical aluminium tool being used with the XPREG XC110 system. The ramp rates and cycle as a whole has been designed to take into account the energy needed to heat both the pre-preg itself and the mould at a suitable rate.
