Xencast® RW4 is a very reliable high-build release wax spray suitable for a wide range of mould-release and barrier applications.
RW4 is compatible with all thermoset resin systems including epoxy, polyester, vinylester and polyurethane and is suitable for use on most substrates including rigid metals, plastics and laminates, as well as flexible polyurethane and silicone moulds.
The aerosol (spray) format makes the wax easier to apply over complex or intricate mould surfaces than conventional hard wax and has the distinct advantage over PVA release agent in that it won’t fish-eye away from repellent substrates or previous release agents.
RW4 contains no silicone and is suitable for use up to 100°C.
How to Use
New patterns, moulds or surfaces will typically require 2-3 coats of RW4. When re-using existing moulds, a single application between releases is often sufficient. When applying to new porous or semi-porous surfaces such as wood, MDF or plaster, 4 or 5 coats may be required. Multiple thin applications are preferable to fewer, thick applications.
Hold the can approximately 300mm from the mould surface and spray evenly, keeping the can moving. Ensure complete coverage. Allow each coat to dry for 10 minutes between applications. Once dry, RW4 can be buffed to a high-gloss, or can be left with a light texture.
Always ensure the wax has fully dried (at least 10 minutes after the last application) before casting.

Hi Tom, I guess the answer to this is yes *and* no. Although we don't tend to use it much for its gloss properties, RW4 is highly polishable and can be taken to a mirror gloss, in the same way that a hard wax (such as #8 wax) can, so from a perspective of the glossiness of the surface, yes, RW4 will certainly 'gloss up' the surface of sheet wax.
That said, the problem with the surface of sheetwax is generally not its glossiness (although - for sure - it's not glossy), it's more a case that the wax itself, and the application process of it, tends to produce a very subtle, but detectable, undulation in the surface. My suspicion would be that application of the RW4 onto sheetwax will definitely make it more shiny (and massively improve the way that the sheetwax removes from the mould) but is unlikely to make the surface much flatter. The end result being shinier but still imperfect.
very good and easier to apply
Takes a while to build up confidence in a product. But totally amazed by this. The spray finish isn't a textured as I thought and released perfect. Would use this over pva any day.
