ET5429 from Permabond is one of the highest performing two-part structural epoxy adhesives on the market for the bonding of composite materials, in particular carbon fibre, to each other and to other substrates including metals such as aluminium, titanium and steel. As the slower-curing variant of ET5428-B, ET5429 offers a generous 2-4hrs working time and is therefore ideal for larger structures requiring lengthy or complex assembly.
In our own independent testing, ET5429 outperformed 3M’s highly regarded DP490 and our own VM100 MMA adhesives for carbon-to-carbon and carbon-to-aluminium bonding. Additionally, the toughened formula offers exceptional resistance to impact and vibration. As such, ET5429 and its faster ET5428-B variant are the adhesives we recommend for applications requiring the highest possible bond strength and toughness for composite assemblies.
ET5429 is mid-grey in colour for relatively inconspicuous bond-line when used with typical substrates include carbon fibre and GRP. The adhesive is relatively thixotropic, allowing it to accommodate gap-filling up to 5mm and application on vertical surfaces without slumping.
ET5429 has good temperature resistance - still retaining 50% of its maximum strength at 105°C, as well as resistance to fuel and other chemicals.

Pack Sizes and Dispensing
ET5429 is available in 50ml or 400ml pack sizes which can be selected at the top of the page. Both pack sizes use 2:1 ratio cartridges and require a suitable cartridge dispenser gun.
The cartridges are intended to be used with static mixer nozzles which fully mix the two components as they pass through the nozzle. They are supplied with one nozzle but once used, adhesive cures in the nozzle and they need to be discarded. Additional nozzles are available to buy separately:

There is no practical minimum bond thickness for this adhesive although you do need to ensure that *some* adhesive is present, which is why glass spheres are sometimes used to prevent the adhesive from being scraped off completely. Essentially though, as long as an even thin film is applied the bond strength between the two materials will be good.
Yes, certainly. In fact the easiest way to do this is to simply leave the static mixer nozzle in place after you use the adhesive. The adhesive that's in the nozzle will have been mixed and so will cure but the glue at the start of the nozzle will be unmixed and not cured meaning the nozzle will twist off perfectly and the glue inside will have been protected from the atmosphere and so will be perfectly preserved ready for use.
A typical application of the adhesive is approximately a 0.5mm thick layer. At this thickness, one 50ml cartridge would cover an area 30cm by 30cm; a 400ml cartridge would cover an area approximately 90cm by 90cm.
For best results when gluing over a large surface area, use a spreader to help ensure the adhesive is laid down in an even layer.
For structural applications, the ET5429 would offer a greater bond strength than a typical 1k PU grab adhesive. A PU grab adhesive would generally be better where there is a big gap to fill in non structural applications where the flexible joint is advantageous.
