EMP60 Epoxy Moulding Paste

EMP60 is a glass-filled epoxy laminating/reinforcement paste used for the production of epoxy-matrix composite moulds. It can be used on its own or can be used to fill in corners or detailed sections on larger or more complex moulds before the main reinforcement is added.

Sold as a kit (paste and hardener). Available to buy online in 5kg and 21.6kg kits.

EMP60 Epoxy Moulding Paste, as used in our Epoxy Mould Making Starter Kit, available to buy in 5kg or 21.6kg bulk packs.

Also known as laminating paste or putty, this easy to use epoxy mould paste is designed to be used in combination with our EG60 Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat to provide a very quick, clean method of making problem free moulds for carbon fibre and fibreglass lamination.

Being an epoxy based mould making system, EMP60 is ideally suited for use when making epoxy based end products (like carbon fibre parts or epoxy matrix GRP/FRP). The putty is an epoxy mould reinforcement as it already includes both the resin matrix (epoxy) and the reinforcement (finely chopped glass strands) so no additional reinforcement or resin are required.

How to Buy

Available in either a 5kg or 21.6kg pack, please choose the pack size you require from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Both pack sizes include the appropriate amount of hardener.

Yes, certainly chemical release agents such as our Easy-Lease Chemical Release Agent are ideal for use with Epoxy based moulds and will give a very good, reliable release.

The kit will in theory cover an area upto 1.4 square meters. However, we do not recommend the putty is used for a single mould of that size as the mould would end up being very heavy and liable to be damaged if dropped.

For moulds over around 0.5 sqm we would recommend one of our Uni-Mould Complete Mould Making Starter Kits as they are easier to work with on larger moulds producing a lighter and easier to handle mould as well as working out better value for large moulds.

Although it's not ideal (due to brittleness) it probably would be possible, depending on the geometry, however, the fibreous nature of the EMP60 wouldn't be suitable as the actual working face of the mould, but it could potentially be used to back-fill a gelcoat. Also, although the paste can be more brittle, if the tools were solid, this is unlikely to be a problem.

Yes, absolutely. It's highly recommended for that purpose. The timings are very straightforward; you can just use the paste 'wet-on-wet' with your laminating resin and glass cloth. That is to say that you would start with one (or preferably two) applications of epoxy tooling gelcoat. When the gelcoat is at the 'b-stage' you could apply the paste directly onto the gelcoat or, if the 'b-stage' felt less tacky than you'd like you can use some of your laminating resin as a coupling coat to wet-out that bond a bit. You then continue to laminate the rest of the reinforcement straight onto the wet paste. So, in short, you use the paste, laminating resin and reinforcement all at the same time.

The gel coat designed to match with the EMP60 Epoxy Moulding paste is our EG60 Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat.

Moulds produced using our mould making paste are perfectly suited to using with resin infusion. All you need to do is ensure that when you make the mould, your flanges are big enough to give you room to lay up the bagging stack and have somewhere for the resin feed and vacuum outlet to be positioned.

For larger moulds (over 0.25sqm) we would recommend using our Uni-Mould Mould Making System is a more practical mould making system.

The Epoxy Mould Making Putty is not really suitable for use at higher temperatures or for out-of-autoclave prepreg use although for very modest cure temperatures (up to about 75°C) some customers do use this system for OOA prepreg cures.

The system's low HDT of 80°C is the limiting factor. Also the potential presence of any air voids between the gelcoat and the putty can show up as surface blisters on the gelcoat when this system is run up to high temperature.

No, I wouldn't recommend that the epoxy putty is used in conjunction with the Uni-Mould system. This putty is epoxy based and designed to bond properly to epoxy gelcoats. The Uni-Mould system is vinylester and polyester based and so is quite different, chemically, from the epoxy system. If you're looking for a putty or paste that you could use in this way then you'd probably be best making something like this by chopping up some woven glass into short strands and then mixing this (at a high percentage) into some of the coupling coat. You would of course need to catalyse this with MEKP and then you could use it in a similar way to the epoxy putty.

I used this paste to build solid split molds. It was possible to exceed the service temperature a bit without any problem. I also used this paste as a reinforcement of polycarbonate mold cavities, and this product bond to PC just perfectly without any surface preparation
