Forged Carbon Fibre Skinned RX7 Spoiler

Ste was given a 99spec 'odula' blade RX7 spoiler in fibreglass from a friend for free as it had been badly damaged in transit and was un-useable for him.

Ste's idea was to use the shape of the fibreglass and reinforce it using a carbon skinning method, having recently seen Lamborghini starting to produce their 'Forged Carbon' technique on lot's of their components. When investigating this further he found that it was basically chopped strand carbon fibre pressed into a mould under pressure.

Having seen a handful of people get a similar look with skinning parts and along with a concern about getting the cloth laid perfectly Ste thought he would try the forged carbon technique to also give a unique look.

Ste sourced the chopped carbon and used it with Easy Composites vacuum bagging consumables and XCR resin.

ABOUT THE DIY TUNERS

The DIY Tuners

Ste is a 30 year old aircraft engineer in the Royal Air force working on Eurofighter Typhoons, He started a YouTube channel to share his journey of modified cars with Liam who soon after left to work in Saudi Arabia (he's due back soon so Ste can put his feet up).

His interest in composite work came through working on an aircraft that is mainly composite and seeing how strong components could be. Also being in the modified/performance car scene carbon was often used both structurally and aesthetically.

Ste came across our Easy Composites channel and once realised he could use carbon fibre at home that was it, before that he had only seen aircraft grade prepreg that required specific cold storage and timed heating processes etc. our channel opened his eyes to the possibilities of what could be achieved at home.
