Typical Uses

This premium quality 3k woven carbon fibre fabric reinforcement is suitable for a wide range of high performance composite reinforcement applications including hand-lamination, vacuum bagging, resin infusion and skinning.

2/2 twill weave fabric at the 210gsm weight is the most commonly used carbon fabric of all. It is suitable for use in wet-lay, vacuum bagging and resin infusion manufacture as well as for use as a single surface layer where parts are being made to look like carbon fibre (skinning).

When using only carbon fibre reinforcement in a part you should expect to use several layers of this fabric in each part. None-structural components like body panels and covers will typically require 3-6 layers of a carbon fibre cloth of this weight.

For any application where the best possible visual appearance is required then take a look at our ProFinish Carbon Fibre 2/2 Twill fabric that has been partially impregnated with a resin binder on the reverse side. This resin binder keeps the weave perfectly aligned during handling an positioning in the mould for the most critical cosmetic applications.

How to Buy

Our 210g carbon fibre cloth is available to buy in 1m (39"), 1.25m (49") and 1.5m (59") widths. The fabric is sold by the linear metre. The unit price shown is for 1 linear metre but volume discounts automatically apply for larger quantities of fabric.

Please select your chosen fabric width and then purchase the number of linear metres you require. When purchasing multiple metres the fabric will be supplied in one continuous length on a roll.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?Ask our technical team a question.

For wet-lay lamination you will use approximately the same weight of resin as the weight of the fabric. For example, with a 200gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you will have 200g of fabric and thus will need 200g of resin to wet it out, plus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.

'3k' is the filament count or tow size. It simply means that each 'bunch' of carbon fibres that this cloth is woven from is made up of 3000 individual carbon filaments. Bigger counts (6k, 12k etc.) means chunkier 'bunches' of carbon so chunkier fabrics.

Thickness of any reinforcement is dependent on consoldation (how much it's 'squashed down'. For this reason we generally give out thickness figures for when the reiforcement is consoldated under vacuum (1bar); this seems like the most useful figure. For example, a 90gsm carbon, a single layer, compressed under vacuum, would be about 0.1mm thick. For a 200gsm carbon a single layer would be about 0.25mm thick. This is the number you see listed under 'thickness' in the specification table.

You can purchase a sample of our fabrics here.

Well, this depends entirely on what reinforcement you're laminating, speficically how thick and heavy it is. If you're laminating 5mm of carbon fibre you'll use a lot more resin that if you're laminating just 1mm of it. Fortunately though there a really quick rule to get a good estimate - simply add up the total weight of your reinforcement and you'll probably need the same weight in resin. This means that if you're laminating 5 layers of 200g carbon (so a total of 1000g of carbon) then you'll want about 1000g (i.e. 1kg) of Epoxy Resin. If it was 2 layers of 450g glass then you'd need about 900g per square metre.

The carbon fabric itself will survive many hundreds of degrees and is not the limiting factor for almost all applications. The limiting factor will be the heat distortion temperature of the resin system you plan to laminate this fabric with.

An engine rocker/cam cover may easily be exposed to hot oils at around 120°C as well as heat from the exhaust which would be dependent on the engine configuration and level of tune. As such we would recommend considering using a higher temperature resin system such as our Very High Temperature Epoxy Laminating Resin which, with an appropriate post-cure, can be used up to 180°C.

An alternative option would be to consider making the part with an out of autoclave pre-preg carbon fibre where typically the resin systems can achieve a HDT up to 120°C.

For very critical applications, such as aerospace, even dry carbon fabrics will be 'lifed' due to very gradual degradation of the sizing on the fibres, however in practice, for most applications, the degradation is minimal and most users would consider dry fabrics to not have a shelf life when stored appropriately.

All Carbon fibres are naturally charcoal black in colour.

I'm afraid that 1.5m is our widest cloth. Much wider than 1.5m would be very difficult to handle and so is very rarely woven. Don't forget that you can turn the cloth through 90° so that the 'length' of the roll becomes your 'width' i.e. if you had a part that was 2m wide and 1.2m long you could purchase 2 linear metres of 1.25m wide cloth.
Firstly I should point out that this listing is for a dry fabric, not a cured (rigid) sheet - just in case that is what you were expecting it to be. In terms of the CTE, all carbon fibres have essentially the same CTE which very unusually is slightly negative, in the region of of around -1x10^6. However, the CTE of a cured sheet is likely to be influenced more by the resin matrix (which will have a positive CTE).

Our 210g 2/2 twill is woven from Pyrofil TR30S fibre. You will find all the mechanical properties for this fibre listed on the Specification tab.

,p>We do our best to make this as clear as possible but apologies if it's still hard to understand. The width of all of our fabrics is stated in the product name; this cloth for example is 1m wide. The weight is also listed in the product name, this is a 199g fabric which means that 1sqm of it would weigh 199g. Finally, for the length - all our fabrics are sold by the linear metre which means that regardless of their width, if you buy a Qty of '3' you will receive a roll that is 3m long. Buy a Qty of '20' and you'll get a 20m long roll. I hope this is more clear.
